Cutting down adolescent willow clears away hard wood and encourages moose to graze on nutritious green shoots, which spring up in wake of the cutting. dead offering to the living is a biodegradable papermaking sculpture, with each structural element made slowly by hand, extracted from willow harvested by the river.
The willow produced pulp, paper, wood, and woven cordage. Leaves pruned from my houseplants were saved for inlays, and the floor was woven with soft leftover wood shavings, and my own excess hair from a haircut. It was hung outside in Spring for the ravens to find and use for nesting material.
It stands as a ritual object that honors the dead, gives thanks to nature's gifts, and offers itself to the cycle of new life on the land.
